Background:

Numerical and structural chromosome changes are a recognized phenomenon in cancer progression.  While bone marrow is the specimen of choice, unstimulated peripheral blood is an acceptable alternative when bone marrow aspiration is not possible.  Blood chromosome analysis, as a companion to pathological assessment, may aid in the diagnosis and classification of malignant hematological disease.  The specific chromosome aberration may be associated with prognosis and may be useful in directing therapy.   Continued monitoring of bone marrow chromosomes through treatment and remission allows assessment of disease status and the opportunity to observe clonal progression.  Companion fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) studies with appropriate probe sets are valuable in further delineation of chromosome abnormalities and in assessing minimal residual disease.

Methodology:

  • Chromosome analysis (karyotyping) with banding (<400-450 bands)
  • Reflex testing to FISH as appropriate to confirm diagnosis.
